The Calendula flower is a very bright orange flower. From the family of the Marigold plant and can grow in pots, window boxes or outside in the garden. Calendulas love the sun and are very easy to care for. Plant preferably around April, you can harvest the flowers from early summer to late fall depending of your location. Originally grown in Egypt on the border of the Nile, it was already used before Cleopatra’s time for its healing properties. Healers from the Meditterranee and the Middle East utilize the whole flower for different medicines. (Skin, digestive system, wounds, vascular problems just to name a few.)
The easiest way to take advantage of all the properties of this wonderful plant is to harvest the whole flower and separate the petals before placing them in a flat basket. Actually you might use any natural container as long as the petals can breathe. Cover with a clean cloth and let dry for a few days in a warm dark place. As any medicine herbs they need to dry in the dark to keep their healing properties. Store in a glass dark jar preferably or away from the light in a cool place. Then just use the petals, as you need them.
1 Sun damaged Skin
Infuse the Calendula petals with carrier oil at very low heat for about 8 hours in double boiler so you do not burn the oil. Strain the petals in cheesecloth and keep aside. Add the infused carrier oil with equal amount of Carrot seed oil and Apricot Kernel oil. Most recommended carrier oils are: jojoba oil, grape seed oil, wheat germ oil, and hemp oil.
2 Soothing and Relaxing Bath
Take the cheese clothes with the Calendula petals from the above recipe and put them in your warm bath. It will soothe and heal your skin. It is particularly efficient for dry and itchy skin. For a more relaxing moment, add a few Lavender essential oil drops and light a scented candle. The bright orange color of the flower will also bring some sun to your soul during the long winter blues.
3 Moisturizer for Dry Skin
Use the carrier oil infused with the Calendula petals as a daily moisturizer for your body. Keep in a cold place or even in the fridge.
Another way to create a nice moisturizer for the body is to use olive oil. Add the petals to an organic cold pressed olive oil, in a dark glass jar and let it sit for 12 to 15 days. You will know it is ready because of the dark orange color. Use a cheesecloth to drain the oil before using it. With olive oil it is better to add a little bit of Vitamin E before storing to naturally preserve the moisturizer. Be aware that if you keep it in the fridge, the olive oil will solidify.
You actually can use the same process with any kind of oil you would like: Avocado oil, coconut oil, almond oil, pumpkin seed oil, rosehip oil and the oils listed above are the most common carrier oil.
Again you can keep the cheese clothe with the Calendula petals and use it in your bath.
If you do not have use for it right away, place the cheese clothe in a close container in the fridge. It will keep for at least 2 to 3 weeks.
4 Healing Wounds
The medicinal properties of Calendula are very complex and well research. I just want to pass on a few of Grandma recipes. The following are an alternative to commercial antiseptics and ointments. I always have a little jar of Calendula oil at my house in my first aid kit. I have found that applying a little bit of Calendula Oil on scratches, cold sores, light cuts, bruises and burns have worked very well for me, my dog and the kids.
5 Calendula Tincture
1 cup of petals mixed with vodka and distilled water: 2 part vodka, 1 part water until the petals are covered. Seal it off with saran wrap. Let it sit in a warm dark place for 6 to 8 weeks. Strain the petals and put the tincture in a dark glass jar.
Take 3 or 4 drops in a 1 oz glass of water for digestive problems and gastro intestinal upsets.
6 Tea
Infuse the dry leaves with boiling water to make a wonderful natural tea. Very good for sluggish liver and upset stomach. You can mix with nettle leaves or fresh mint leaves for a different taste and more healing properties.
7 In Cooking a Great Alternative to Saffron
Rich in vitamin C, it is a great add on to salads, soups, and pasta or rice dishes. Nice colorful finishing touch for your dish, the petals are pleasing to the eye and the palate as well as healing for the digestive system. When you cook your rice or your sauces with a few petals, they will naturally turn to yellow or orange.
It is easy to plant Calendula seeds. They prefer a light well drained soil with full exposure to the sun. If you were going to use the flowers and the petals for consumption, I would recommend buying organic seeds. This plant reseeds easily so all you have to do is let a few flowers go to seeds for your next year harvest. It is important to collect your Calendula flowers when the flower is wide open and healthy. This is when all of the healing properties are their peak. Plant around April and you can harvest until late in the fall. If you do not have a garden, planting the seeds in window boxes will work very well to.

The long hair style is hot, and that is why many women prefer to wear lengthy, free-flowing tresses rather than the popular short styles of the day. But long hair can also become boring. In fact, boredom is the number one reason why women get tired of their long hair style and choose to try a different, shorter style.
The truth is, though, that there are never-ending options when it comes to styling lengthy tresses. You just have to know when and how to change it up a bit to keep your long hair style looking fresh, stylish and up-to-date. Yes, it may take a little practice in the beginning, but in no time you will be able to quickly turn out exciting new looks with a few simple tricks.
Straight and sleek long hair style
A good ceramic straightening iron such as the Sedu flat iron can help you achieve sleek, silky and shiny tresses in just a few minutes. No matter what texture of long hair you have, even if it is naturally curl and fuzzy, you can change your long hair style in a flash with a flat iron. Imagine being able to straighten your hair in less than 10 minutes.
The trick to achieving sleek long hair is in the tools and products that you use. What you need is a high-quality ceramic iron, a shine product and finishing spray. Simply apply the shine product to your dry long hair and smoothly run the flat iron through your hair from the roots to the tips using about ” sections. The ceramic iron will infuse moisture and shine into your long hair style leaving you with healthy, shiny locks that will be the envy of everyone you meet. Finish off your long hair style with a little bit of finishing spray, and you’re beautifully prepared to face your day.
Textured and curly long hair style
If your long hair already has some curl or wave, you can accomplish this style with very little effort. All you need to do is use a little gel and scrunch your curl into place with a diffused blow dryer. Once you do that, simply spritz your long hair style with an extra hold styling spritz.
If you have been blessed with poker straight tresses, you can achieve the same look with hot rollers or tube rollers. The trick to making this long hair style look natural is in the products that you use and how you use them. Be sure to use a good quality spritz and finishing spray. Use the finishing spray to spray your long hair before and after you roll it, and use the spritz to add shine and finish your style. By applying spritz to your long hair style and gently running your fingers through the curled locks, you can achieve a natural look with a lot of shine.
Updos and long hair style
An easy way to change your long hair style is to wear it up. No, I’m not talking a pony tail here girls. This may take a little creativity, but with a little practice you can have your long hair style swept up into an exotic style that only takes a few seconds to achieve. French twists are always a classic as are bun variations and pulled-through pony tails.

Why do we settle for less and then make excuses for everyone? Perhaps it is a way to avoid confrontation, or it could be that we simply don’t have time, or choose not to deal with poor customer service and the boss who promised a raise that never quite made its way to our paycheck. Those are some of the possibilities, but there is another option- we settle, or make excuses, for others because we have given away our power to the other person involved in the equation. This stuff makes me just a little nutty, so I thought I’d share a couple of stories with you and the offer my thoughts on how we can take back, or own our power- if you choose.
Both of these stories involve members of my family, but in the interest of protecting their identity, I am using fake “nicknames”- even though I am very tempted to expose them, but I think they are already suffering enough. Recently, I was having a conversation with a family member who lives on the West Coast, and she was telling me how one of the bedrooms in her condo had suffered water damage a few weeks ago. (You may recall that certain states out West, California for example- hint, hint, received more rain than normal this year).
This water damage was making for some unhealthy breathing conditions in their home (can you say mold spores?), and the person who inhabited the once flooded bedroom had effectively moved out and was staying with friends until the damage to the room was repaired. Now, and this is the good part, I say to my family member on the West Coast, why have the necessary repairs not taken place yet? And she calmly explains to me that she has been back and forth with the condo association and the contractor, blah, blah, blah and “you just don’t understand. These people out here are very laid back. They are not in a big hurry to do anything,
and if you get upset with them, they are hurt by it and ask you why you are yelling at them”. “Let them ask!” I yell. My blood pressure has gone up significantly while on the phone with this family member and I just cannot believe what I am hearing about the complete lack of action to this flooding problem. (I am also worried about the fact that West Coast, and friends, are living in a condo suffering from severe allergy-type ailments, caused by the mold spores, which was caused by the dampness emanating from the flooded bedroom, etc.). I make several recommendations on how to resolve this issue, for the interim- or longer, should these laid back people choose to never show up to make the repairs, and then I hang up and head for the shower, shaking my head along the way.
Like most times in my life, once I am in the shower with no distractions other than which shampoo to use, I begin to process things. This time I am focused on the phone conversation I’ve just had when suddenly I have an epiphany; you know, that “ah ha” moment that makes everything crystallize in front of you. So, while I am having this moment of clarity, I recall another conversation I had just two-days prior, with another family member, about his work situation. This person works for a relative of his and this person is not much of a go-getter, so work is slow and this puts my family member in a stressful financial situation. I asked the family member sitting at my kitchen table a few perfunctory questions as a means in which to offer alternatives and perhaps a few suggestions, but each question or recommendation was met with a combination of, “yep, tried that” and then a big sigh of resignation, the “making excuses and settling” type of sigh. I got up from the table feeling really dragged down by what this person was going through- call it the pain of empathy. Now these two discussions have converged in my mind and I begin mentally blurting out questions like, “why are they settling?”, and “why are they making excuses for these other people?” The answer is this; they are doing this because they have chosen to take a very passive role in these aspects of their lives. Instead of exerting their own personal power, and working to turn these situations around, they have abdicated their personal power and will to the very people for whom they are making excuses.
Eureka! Is this not exactly what those people want? They are not expected to be accountable and as such, they are not going
to act responsibly, and “West Coast” and “Kitchen Table” are most certainly not going to hold them accountable because they have already given their power away in both of these situations.
And guess what? No one wins in either of these scenarios, or a million others like it that play out every day. I am fired up on behalf of “West Coast” and “Kitchen Table” and now that I’ve had my brilliant epiphany, I am going to have some follow-up dialogue with them and coach them to take charge, take back their power and get the mold out- no pun intended, and the money coming in. Now that I have resolved to do that, I’d like to give you just a little bit of background about what I consider personal power.
Allow me this quick tangent and I think you will see the connection. When I started my own business, I solicited a group made-up of colleagues, friends, and family to help me come up with a name for the business. I held a contest, and chose the “winner” from the dozens of ideas that were submitted. POWER Image was the name I chose, and although the acronym, POWER, came with some ideas about what it should mean, I changed them to reflect the philosophy and objective I have for those that I coach, or who attend my seminars. I thought I’d share The Story Behind the POWER, to further explain its importance:
First you must understand your Purpose in order to create a presence, and then you can begin to Own Your Power and Control Your Destiny. Move on to execute the WOW! factor; WOW your clients, your colleagues, your boss, your team, and whoever is important in your life. At all times in this journey, demonstrate Empathy for others, and finally, be sure to take time to Recognize and reward others.
Now, there is a caveat here in that you may have to recognize someone for negative things, but if you have established purpose in your life and you do own your power, the less likely that the negative may happen to you, or that you find yourself “settling”. By the same token, if more people learned to practice this approach, I may not have a
reason for writing this…… The bottom line is that no one has total control over your life, your career, or your experiences as a consumer, unless you allow it to happen. This could be a subconscious event where you are not even aware that this has occurred. You are the only one who can make a choice as to whether you will be the victim OR take control over the aspects of your life you deem most important. I am not saying you should debate with everyone about every little thing- no one has the time for that. What I am saying is stand up for what is important to you. Accept that there are moments in life where some things will not change and that you will need to be the one to make change happen, perhaps by finding another job, or a new cable service or credit card provider. Do what you have to do and move on. Just don’t let it be done to you or you run the risk of settling for less than you deserve and giving away your power.

There are many millions of people that suffer from acne everyday! Acne is a very common thing and almost everyone at some point in their life will suffer from it. Some of the reasons that acne occurs is from oily skin. The secretions of grease come from the sebaceous glands. This is why the pores or the small hair follicles become clogged. Sometimes if the pores are larger than others, a blackhead will form. Blackheads are flat and small with a dark circle in the middle. The center is black because it comes in contact with air. In other cases when the pore remains small, this is when a whitehead will occur. Whiteheads are skin covered, closed bumps that are the same color as your skin.
Both kinds of clogged pores can become irritated, swollen and with deeper pimples. There is also a type of acne that is called, cystic acne. Cystic acne is major swelling under the skins surface and can become very inflamed or even infected. These cysts usually occur when severe acne is present. Usually acne affects teenagers at the age 10 to 13 and is usually around the time that puberty starts. Only about 20% of acne affects adults. People with very oily skin are more prone to acne than others. When a teenager has a problem with acne it usually lasts for about 5 to 10 years. There have been studies that have shown that boys have more severe cases of acne than girls do. However acne will affect the female gender!
Acne can be found usually on the face but, in some cases it can be found on the neck, arms, back, on the scalp, under your arms, genital area, buttocks and even legs. Some of the myths of acne are that it is caused by the foods people eat. Other myths are that acne is caused by not keeping the body clean or even by the amount of sexual drive one has. This is not a true fact! Studies have been conducted to prove this fact. Also some studies have found that acne is caused by hormones and is also hereditary. It has been proven that hormones, hygiene and even diet can irritate the present acne but it is not the main cause of it.
The main causes of acne have been found to be bacteria and hormones! Some people can suffer severely and have many problems getting rid of acne and others can only be inflicted with mild cases. It all depends on the type of skin they have and how oily it is. In today’s market there are many different treatments that will prevent and help all people with their acne problems, no matter how mild or severe the case. There are some home remedies that can be tried to help clear up acne. These methods of course have not been approved by any dermatologist. Some of these home treatments are even considered to be quite strange. You may apply toothpaste (not gel) to the pimple before going to bed. Another treatment is using egg white to the infected area. Apply before going to bed or you may use egg white for 20 minutes, then wash it off. If the home remedies are not effective, or the over the counter medicines do not help it is best to contact a dermatologist!

Thanks to technological advances, experts in dermatology have been able to observe the effect that our diet has on our skin’s texture and appearance.
Many recent studies in dermatology confirm that the most significant factor in skincare does not only depend on the cosmetics that we apply (which, of course, do make a difference) but also largely on our diet.
So…which diet should we implement to look great?
WATER
Our body is 70 percent water; therefore, it’s logical that any lack of sufficient water intake will affect our appearance.
That’s why drinking water is undoubtedly the easiest and most efficient way of preventing the signs of aging, maintaining the skin smooth and the body healthy.
HOW DOES WATER AFFECT OUR SKIN?
Water eliminates the toxins in our body that are daily stored up through contact with pollutants, tobacco smoke, stress and other sources of free radical formation. Concretely, free radicals are the principal cause of skin diseases and premature aging.
Water not only gives skin a more youthful appearance but also eliminates all of these elements, which cause the appearance of acne. Acne is formed by the accumulation of bacteria, oil, dead skin and dirt on the skin. Even for those with oily skin and problems with acne, water is needed to wash away both internal and external impurities.
Additionally, water helps vitamins and nutrients to easily flow throughout the body. In particular, it collaborates with all of the body’s organs to distribute vitamins E, C and B12, which help maintain the skin smooth and young.
HOW MUCH WATER DO I NEED TO DRINK DAILY?
Normally it’s recommended that a person drink at least a liter and a half of water, although many dermatologists recommend increasing the dose to two or three daily liters.
WHEN IS IT ESSENTIAL TO DRINK WATER?
It’s very important to drink and recuperate lost fluid after exercising or sunbathing. Don’t forget that water is good not only for your organism but also for your outward appearance.
WATER INSIDE AND WATER OUTSIDE
When cleansing facial skin or the body, it’s best that the water be lukewarm. Very hot water can dry out the skin excessively, but at an adequate temperature, its cleansing power is enormous.
BEAUTY TRICK
Drink water in the morning; it will help eliminate a puffy or swollen face.
Who would have thought that water would end up being one of the most relevant beauty secrets in the new millennium?

Unwanted hair is a matter of immense worry to many people, both men and women. Even when the hair growth is normal, the concern persists and a great deal of time and money are spent to remove the surplus hair. Usually the demand is for getting rid of hair under the arms and on the body and bikini line. The methods employed for this purpose include shaving, tweezing, waxes, creams and electrolysis. But an increasing number of people now turn to high-tech, non-invasive laser hair removing.
A laser is an apparatus that produces electromagnetic radiation using the oscillations of atoms. It is considered safe. Quality laser hair removal centers use technology and products approved by Food & Drug Administration (FDA).
An expert, preferably a qualified medical doctor, directs the laser beam at the hair follicle, which absorbs the energy through the dark pigmentation, weakens and dies. The hair is unlikely to grow there again as before. The light colored skin around the follicle dissipates the energy and is not damaged. Fair persons have higher success rate in laser hair removing than the dark-skinned.
A good laser hair removal center or clinic will carefully study the skin condition of the potential client before agreeing to carry out the procedure.
Several clinics prefer online answers to a standard questionnaire before the first appointment. The exact number of sittings to complete the job will be decided only after the initial examination. Dark-skinned persons require more sessions for hair removal than fair skinned individuals.
There are a number of quality laser hair removal centers all over New York. The cost depends on the extent of work to be done. But price charts are available. Sometimes it may be possible to get a reduction by, say, promising to recommend the clinic to a friend.
The initial consultation is generally free.

1. BLISTERS
Footwear that pinches you, will give you blisters. You should not wear loose shoes either, since constant rubbing can also give rise to blisters.
Care
• Till the blisters has dried, do not wear the same shoe.
• Do not try to puncture the blister yourself, as your can infect your skin
• Use a good talcum powder and keep the blister dry while going out.
• When at home, apply an antiseptic cream over the blister.
2. CORNS
One is likely to get corns at places where one gets blisters. If the same defective shoe is being worn repeatedly, you will develop corns.
Care
• Change your shoes( foot wear) frequently.
• The best remedy is to leave corns alone and scrub them hard. with a pumice-stone and massage after that - If the corns are too painful, consult your doctor.
3. SWEATY TOES
There can pose a lot of problems. If you wear shoes, they always tend to get loose and acquired a peculiar odour.
Care
• Avoid wearing closed shoes altogether.
• Wash your feet with cold water often.
• Use a skin astringent on the soles of your feet.
4. ENLARGED VEINS
This generally occurs when one has to stand a lot and sometimes because of wearing very high heels.
Care
• Do not wear very tight shoes.
• Give yourself a little rest during the day by taking off your shoes and resting your toes higher than the level of your head.
5. CRACKED HEELS
Lack of moisture and oil can bring about such a condition.
Care
• Use glycerine and oil to massage your feet once a week.
• Use a good moisturiser daily.
6. CRACKED NAILS
This happens due to neglect of the toe-nail and also if the health in general is not good.
Care
• Include plenty of vitamins in your daily diet.
• Massage the toe nails with a rich nourishing cream daily.
• Do not use a dry nail-polish
7. SWOLLEN FEET
This results if one is net used to sitting or standing for too long, with feet hanging down and rather right shoes.
Care
• Wash your feet with soap and hot water and apply Eau-de-Cologne on them.
• Avoid sitting with your legs hanging down for too long.
• Lie down with the feet higher than your head as often as possible.
8. BUNIONS
These are caused due to certain pressure of the shoes on the toes. It is difficult to get rid of bunions so it is best to avoid them. When buying shoes, look for comfort rather than style.
9. FUNGAL INFECTION
Feet are more prone to such infections because fungus thrives in a moist and airless atmosphere, where the sun does not reach.
Care
• Switch over to open shoes or sandals without socks
• Use any anti-fungal cream, especially between the toes, which is the breeding place for infection.
