Are Poker Players Gamblers?

When we talk about online poker players, it is all too easy to label these artisans as gamblers. We tend to bandy around this term unfairly, linking the skilled players of games like online poker in with the thoughtless players who play games based only on chance. For the edification of the public, this article will address whether poker players are gamblers. Do they deserve this label? Or are gamblers something different from the educated and informed players who sit down at the classic green felt?

The final word on this debate is that poker online players are not gamblers. The term gambler implies a high level of chance and uncertainty. Gamblers “gamble” on an outcome without knowing whether they will win or not. Good poker players are able to accurately predict the cards and calculate the pot odds. This means that they can predict how the game will go. They are not “gambling” on an outcome, therefore should not be called gamblers. This may seem like a somewhat pedantic debate on terms and labels, but it really means much more. What our society calls poker players reveals how it feels towards the game of poker as a whole. When we recognize the skill inherent in the game, we will realize that good poker players should never be called gamblers.

Out of all the ways to study the game of poker, straight up having friends and acquaintances to talk about the casino game with might be one of the best resources outside of simple hand to hand experience. You can read as many books and columns as you want, but having a group of regular player friends that you can talk about live circumstances, hand to hand statistics and situations, and the like can be a huge asset to review and correct your play over time. I’ve met some of my best poker friends by playing in local area games in my city for a while, but also I’ve met players through online discussion areas, writing for poker publications, and playing in tournaments. If you don’t have friends from your everyday life who play, going to some events or being much social at the table can result in some nice connections for discussion, even if they don’t last longer than the session. Beyond all this, having poker friends at the table with you make the game that much more bearable in slow spots, and more fun. Sure, we’re all there to make money, but involving in conversation and making the table a more positive experience can change it from a run in the mud to a good time.

Though online poker professionals will tell you the only reason to play the game is to make money, online poker has other benefits beyond the potential of adding to your bank account. First of all, poker is a fun, social arena where friends can get together, and play for low stakes, even pennies. There will be plenty of bantering and laughs, sudden surprises and a general good time. Poker is great entertainment in which are you actively involved as a participant rather than as a spectator. It can be played competitively and provide the same excitement and thrill as sports activities. When you play poker, you sharpen your mental skills. If you want to win, then you have to learn some basic math calculations for figuring out the odds of playing your hands. You’ll also be facing some tough decisions, and will have to focus on making rational judgment calls. Playing poker is bound to make you more observant of other people and their intentions. These are skills that can enhance your everyday life too. And, of course, you can make money while having fun playing poker. Perhaps you’ll just pick up a bit of pocket cash to pay for your drinks. Then there is always the possibility of winning a big tournament prize too. Poker is one form of gambling where you are not playing long odds and relying on luck against the house casino. The gambling aspect though is the one possible con to playing poker. If you are the type who gets hooked on gambling and keeps digging into your wallet for money to wager, then do not play poker.

online poker experts offer plenty of tips on the best strategies to use. The most basic of these is which starting hands to play in Texas Hold ‘Em poker online . For beginners, it is proper to adhere to these guidelines while gaining experience in free or low-stakes games. As your game improves though, you will find there are times to deviate from the “book” and play each hand for the unique situation that it is. online poker is not a game played just by the numbers. It is a game of people, psychology and situations. In some card games, such as Blackjack or Bridge, there are defined correct ways to play the cards. That is not true in poker. You have to look beyond the numbers and analyze the situation, taking into account these factors: * Your opponents’ tendencies - do they play loose, tight, or bluff a lot? * Your own playing style and how others perceive you * Your opponent’s state of mind - are they eager for action, tired, or getting desperate? * Stack sizes at the table Playing “ABC” poker reduces much of the risk involved in how you play your hands. However, it is also very predictable. One key element at wining poker is putting your opponents on tough decisions because they cannot always predict which cards you will play. Learn the by-the-book theories, but once you get some experience, start experimenting with different strategies, like raising with suited connectors from the button or executing a check-raise bluff from early position.

Relative Position, Info Raising, and Isolation Betting

The online poker situation: You’re playing 1/2 six-max and you’re dealt AJd on the cutoff. It’s folded around to you and you make the standard raise of 4x the big blind. Making it 8 to play. You get called by the small blind and the big blind. The dealer folds.

The flop comes Jc-Kh-2c. The small blind checks and the big blind leads out with a bet of 8 into a 20 dollar pot. What does this tell you about his poker hand?

First it says that he’s either on a) a drawing hand, b) top pair, or c) a set. The set is most likely not the thing you’re worrying about. Instead, you’re wanting to see if he’s really got the king or he’s just betting because he hit some of the pot.

Now our hand is a little tricky. We have 2nd pair with the nut kicker. There is a straight draw out there as well as a flush draw and an over pair possibility. All of these could crush our hand if we gave a free card, and the K is already crushing our hand if it hit. So we’re going to use our relative position to the bettor to do two things. First, we want to isolate the raiser and get the small blind out of the picture. Just calling wouldn’t do that effectively since we’d be giving the small blind huge pot odds to stick around.

So we decide to info raise which also will serve as an isolation raise. We bet out 20 dollars into a 28 dollar pot. The small blind folds, so we accomplished our isolation, and the big blind decides to call again. Another sign of weakness on his part, which leads us to believe now that he’s definitely on some kind of draw and doesn’t have top pair.

Let’s see what our villain is going to do now. The pot is up to about 65 and he only bets out 22. That’s giving us incredible odds to look him up, even with third pair, and will give us a lot of info on how he plays. He ends up turning over J9s, giving him two pair on the river. So now we know how he plays his drawing hands. It cost us little money a we controlled the pot most of the way through, and we successfully isolated. Sure we didn’t win the hand because he luckboxed us on the river with his two pair. But for future reference, we now know that we can’t bet him off of second pair with a coordinated board with a pot sized bet. And we can evaluate from his play that he’s loose and slightly passive. Ahh, inforaising at it’s finest at the casino online.

Dead Draw

poker online players usually try to disguise their hands, especially when they know they hold the winning cards. When you are holding the nuts, you want to keep other players betting into the pot, so slow playing your hand is the smart move. This is especially true when the board texture is shaping up to put someone on a draw. For instance, you might hold Ace-King and the board is 10-Jack-Queen rainbow, giving you the Ace high straight. However, another player may be holding 9-Queen. Your opponent looks to holding top pair with an open-ended straight draw for the 8 or King. The turn brings a blank, so you make a small value bet and get called. Your online pokeropponent is drawing dead on the river because even if the 8 or King materializes, your higher straight is better. The poker online player holding the second hand is drawing dead for the low straight. In these situations, a player will often get so excited about the possibility of hitting the straight that they fail to notice that a better hand could already be made. It doesn’t happen often, but be alert to the fact that when you have a made hand, especially the highest straight possible, then it’s likely someone else may be drawing to a lower straight and will bet off their chips chasing that dead draw.

Goldman Sachs, a US investment bank, is predicting that poker online for US citizens will be legalized eventually and regulated by the US government. Using the Party Poker Gaming Network as a sample, the firm has concluded that just with it’s 9% market share, such a site would genereate billions for the economy just in rake alone. If the US were to legalize poker online, the investment giant estimates that the poker industry alone would be worth close to 3 billion dollars. They took their research a little further and concluded that the average make off of each player for the government coffers would be just over 300 dollars per player. And if such a legalization were to go one step further, such as including online casinos with games such as blackjack and roulette, then the worth would skyrocket up 4x to about 12 billion. Sachs predicts that such a lift and reregulation would help several sites that have proprietary software, such as Everest Poker, as they would grow in popularity if they were allowed to operate without restrictions in the US. Though the process is to be a slow one, with legislation being pushed back to September so far, the lure of tax revenue will eventually push the US to legalize online poker, making not only the players happy, but the market itself more competitive.

Flying an Airplane at Eighteen

I can remember my best friend growing up just being obsessed with airplanes and flying. We used to go to so many air shows, and he even built an airplane with his father. I went over to his house and in his garage his father and him would be working on different parts of the airplane at different times. The airplane would not fit in the garage so it would be put together in a hanger at the air strip. The garage had a place for the car, a place for to work on the airplane, and then an exercise area to get healthier after taking the acceletrim aid for weight loss. It was organized in a very sophisticated manner.

For the longest time they worked on the tail of the airplane, then the wings, and the body. They did not build the motor, just the body. They first started the project when we were ten and he told me that when he turned eighteen that we will both be flying in the air in the airplane that he and his father build. I remember thinking at the time that it would take forever. It did not take them that long and the completed it a year early. It was in the hanger when we were seventeen, so we had a year to look at it without flying in it. He worked real hard and got his pilot’s license and right when he turned eighteen we went up in the air. It was intense because it had never been in the air before, luckily, we made it and it was so much fun. To see something finally put into use and to experience it was a blast. I am very fortunate to have a friend like that growing up; he had a dream, created it, made it, and followed through with everything he said he would do.

Poker Terms: ‘Pot Committed’

A player is said to be ‘pot comitted’ in poker en ligne when mathematically it is incorrect for him to fold his hand no matter what cards are dealt. A player can end up pot committed when he has so little chips in relation to the blinds that no matter what two cards he holds, it is favorably in his odds to stay in.

This can happen in a couple different ways. It happened to me once in an online poker tournament setting where the blinds have gotten large and a player finds that when he puts in his big blind, he has committed more than half of his remaining chips. In this instance, even if he is dealt 7-2 against aces, for instance, it is still mathematically correct, given his odds to win and the amount in the pot in relation that he has to pay to get in that he put the rest of his chips in.

This can also happen in poker when a player is caught bluffing or semi-bluffing and his opponent goes over the top of his bet all-in with not much more than the original bet was. In this case, though it is almost certain that the betting player is behind, it is still right to call even if the only way he can win is a gut shot or runner. The odds on the money already in the pot are just too great, and the slight chance of winning for a little more cost is preferable to not paying the small amount more and having no chance.
