When you play online poker enough hours every day, your bound to eventually see every situation there is to see. One thing that is a recurring theme is many players overrating hands that are above average, but certainly not great. Queen-jack, even offsuit, is a hand that many people play as if it were a great hand, when in fact it is dominated by many other hands.

During an online poker session recently, I witnessed a hand between two players that illustrated this kind pf playing. One fellow, who had been playing very tight, made a big raise. Now normally, when a person who barely plays any hands makes a big raise, it means to me that they have a huge hand, and they are the type of player who will only play big hands. No problem, I’ll wish him luck, fold my hand and move on. Anyway the other player in the hand made a reraise. The first guy, the tight poker player, just called. The flop came out A-J-4. The second player who made the reraise, bet out and the first guy reraised all in. the second guy called him and showed Q-J. The first, tight player showed A-Q. Why the second guy would call an all-in bet with the second best hand is beyond me. Anyway, he went on to lose the hand.

This hand perfectly illustrated the folly of playing hands like Q-J as if they were K-K. Certainly, Q-j is a nice hand and you can often win with it. But, especially if one or more other players in the hand have raised before the flop, you are often behind in the hand right from the start if you decide to call. Be sensible when playing Q-J, and don’t assume it is unbeatable.
