Kids and Weight Training: When Should They Start?

Weight training and exercise in general can be very beneficial to all children. It increases bone density, increases strength, and improves muscular coordination. In the past many people had concerns about children and exercise but now we are much better informed.

What age should they start?
This is more of an ethical question. A child can start training with weights at any age, but the real question is: should they? Providing they have a well-designed program and constant supervision by a qualified trainer they will achieve benefits from weight training. But before you do start your child with weights consider what they are trying to achieve.

If it is to improve their sport, then you will find that concentrating more on the skills of the sport, rather than strength will usually provide faster improvements.

If you are looking to build muscle and strength, then it’s no good starting them with weights until they start producing testosterone. This is usually between 14-17 years.

Making Weight Training Safe for Kids
Make sure your child has a positive experience with exercise by following these guidelines:

All equipment should be safe and inspected regularly for defects.

Training equipment should be located in an uncrowded area.

The child must have the emotional maturity to follow instructions relating to technique and safety.

There must be adequate supervision of the child by an experienced and registered Trainer to ensure correct technique is used.

Training should start with a thorough warm-up and finished with a thorough cool-down.

No weight should be added to the exercise until the child can perform it with correct technique.

Full range of motion must be performed on all exercises. If this cannot be done then the weight is too heavy.

No maximum lifts or competitions should be attempted.

Full body programs are advised. These should be done 2-3 times per week.

The child should perform 2-3 sets of 10-15 repetitions.

The weight should only be increased when the child can perform 15 repetitions with correct technique.

Make It Fun!!!!!

Does Tiger Woods Have an UNFAIR Advantage?

Gepost door admin op 19/05/2008

Why does Tiger seem to have an UNFAIR advantage?
Is it because he can hit the ball farther. Is it his ability
to sink putts in clutch situations? Is it his sharp
short game?

The truth is there are times he does ALL these things
to near perfection but for the most part, he seems to
have something else going for him. Something that’s
hard to define or describe. It’s not luck or chance
and I’m sure if you asked Tiger, he may have a
difficult time describing or putting it into words.

Even when he’s not striking the ball to the best of his
ability he’s able to maintain an inner confidence
that he can still win. He knows his real strength is not
his ball striking ability but his belief that if he isn’t
optimum in the physical sense, his mental golf game is.

I remember earlier in Tiger’s career, when approached
after a round he would say ” I didn’t have my “A” game
today.

You generally got the sense that the other pro golfers
were a little peeved with his cockiness. It appeared as
though he was belittling his performance which was
already the best in the field and in doing so, belittling
the rest of the field.

What he was actually doing was rating only the physical
performance. What he failed to mention was that his
mental golf game was just fine, thank you very much.

If I’m to attempt at defining what Tiger seems to have
more of, it’s control over his subconscious mind.
Through greater control and harmony of his non conscious
thoughts with his will or conscious thoughts, he is able
to execute successfully with greater frequency.

It’s easier to understand how they can be at odds with one
another when you consider that our brains process on
average 60,000 thoughts daily. To think we interpret all
of these thoughts positively is both naive and unrealistic.
There’s just far to much we expose ourselves to that we have
no control over.

So I know I haven’t answered your big question yet. If that’s
the case then How does Tiger do it?

He practices his MENTAL GOLF GAME. He influences and
feeds his non conscious mind with the right mindset and
thoughts. He’s able to convert this to positive visualization
power that he has conditioned his mind to have more of than
the rest of the pack.

I’m sure Tiger would have a difficult time exacting what
percent of his success he attributes to his mental game, but he
knows one thing for certain, it’s enough to make the
difference.

Chances are if you’re like most die hard golfers, you’ve probably
spent a small fortune on equipment to improve. But how much have
you spent on YOUR MENTAL GOLF GAME?

Don’t Get Ripped Off On Golf Vacations

Gepost door admin op 06/05/2008

Whether it’s a quick weekend getaway or a 10 day golf adventure to the Caribbean, there is one thing in common with all golf trips and vacations… rip-offs are common.

Here are a few things to be careful of when booking your next golf trip.

1. Cart Fees.

Many courses will require you to rent a cart, even though your package deal never mentioned it. Make sure you know up front if cart fees are included and or required.

2. Course Surcharges

You may be offered to “upgrade” to a better course when you arrive at your destination. This is a common practice in many areas. The fact is that the course you “upgrade” to in many cases will not be any better than the course you are booked on.

3. Internet Deals

Many golf trips these days are sold by internet resellers. The price may be right, but they have no idea of the local market. They are selling a commodity and could care less what other events are happening in the area or what local conditions are. Dealing with local people in the area you plan to visit will eliminate many of these surprises.

4. Do you need a “package” deal?

You will find that package deals sometimes will cost you more than just booking a hotel and a “golf” market and winging it. Once you book your accommodations, the concierge or front desk will be able to direct you to the best deals. This works especially during the off peak times. So many people get involved in the package deals that the prices can be increased by 50-75% over what it would cost you to book it yourself.

To save a ton of money, call the local area Better Business Bureau (all the offices are online at bbb.com) and ask for information on the local public courses. In addition just Google “Golf In …), you will come up with a ton of options.

Advice From Tennis on Finding the Correct Tennis Racquet

If you want to pick up your tennis ability then an improved class of tennis racquet is going to be imaginably one of the tennis items at the top of your list. Though, just prior of acquiring a tennis racket there are a great quantity of factors that ought to be weighed-up. These take account of: the tennis rackets heaviness, strength, head dimensions & a substantial number of additional factors. By considering what disadvantages the various brand of racquets can supply will aid you to make a better choice whilst in the procurement process.

Power Level: Find Tennis Rackets reviewed at VTennis.co.uk

The power excised by today’s tennis racket differs significantly and each and every level provides terrific advantages dependent on your specific tennis technique. The three types of strength levels in a tennis racket are the following; ?Power Rackets?, ?Tweener Rackets’ & ?Control Racquets?.

Power rackets achieves a large quantity of strength & is designed for those to take shorter and relaxed tennis swings. Tweener rackets are for people who are yearning for a compromise between strength and control & are hence aimed for tennis players that adopt an intermediate to long racket swing speeds, and as well take a medium to long cuts at the ball. These are more suitable for young people who are moving to full length tennis rackets.

Last, but unquestionably not least, control rackets are expected for tennis individuals that acquire lengthy and rapid tennis swings when they play. The major cause for this is that control racquets require the individual to fashion the power. This nature of racquet would be best kept away from young people unless they know how to deal with the further weight.

The Dish: Super Bowl Blah.

I. Can’t. Care.

This is the second Super Bowl in the past decade over which I
simply cannot get myself worked up. No matter what I try,
Pittsburgh v. Seattle leaves me coooooold. The other game that
failed to stoke any fires whatsoever was Oakland/Tampa, a.k.a.,
the Gruden Bowl. Everyone involved in that contest just seemed
like kind of a prick. In this one, everyone seems vaguely nice.
Jerome Bettis is a fine fellow, but I am neither surprised by
the fact that he has parents, nor am I surprised that they are
overweight, nor do I want to read any more media types talking
about how tired of the Bettis story they are. The whole thing
has basically soured me on The Bus, at least for this weekend.
Ben Roethlisberger and Matt Hasselbeck are middle-of-the-road
QBs who are being called “great,” but that’s because people need
to overstate things…it’s the Super Bowl. Willie Parker is a
glorified third-down back. Shaun Alexander seems soft to me.
Hines Ward is tough as nails and a great teammate, but looks to
be slowing down severely. Bill Cowher has a mustache. Mike
Holmgren has a mustache.

I suppose this is what betting’s for. Lay down a few fins on
either of the squads and some miscellaneous prop bets, and the
contest gets quite a bit more interesting. (Thank heavens for
offshore gambling.) For the record, I’m taking Seattle and the
points, though not heavily. It’s just kind of…a humdrum
matchup. Does anyone really think the Steelers are the best team
in the AFC? (People in Boston and Indianapolis, I see you waving
your arms.) And does anyone think the NFC is any kind of test of
whether a team is any good? What are the leading storylines
here? “Can Roethlisberger Not Suck Once Again?” “Can Hasselbeck
Snap The Ball Before Pittsburgh Can Set Its Blitz?” “Can Bill
Cowher’s Jaw Reach Midfield With Cowher Standing On The
Sidelines?” Yawn. There’s simply not much here, unless you’re
from the ‘Burgh or Latte Land.

I think the Seahawks’ D will confuse Big Ben a bit, I think
Shaun Alexander shows he’s better than you think, and I think
Seattle keeps it close enough to cover. But I don’t think any of
these things with any kind of real enthusiasm. For me, this is
the Chicago White Sox and Houston Astros facing off in a World
Series. Bleh.

Predictions for Super Bowl XL?

Greg Jorssen, BoDog.com: I predict that we will have a record
breaking Super Bowl in terms of handle. That’s for sure! As for
the game itself, this will be a defensive battle, thus I predict
a low-scoring affair. That said, the Super Bowl never fails to
surprise me. Maybe it is the adrenaline pumping through the
players’ veins, but Super Bowls tend to be higher-scoring than
what I usually expect. In fact, the past five Super Bowls have
been higher than the posted totals. I do feel, however, that
this is the year that trend comes to an end. As to which team
will win, I am going to look at the teams’ histories playing in
the Super Bowl. This is Pittsburgh’s 6th trip back, and they are
4-1 straight up and against the spread. As for Seattle, this is
of course their first trip to the big one, and teams playing in
their first Super Bowl are 9-14-1 against the spread. Based on
this, my head says Pittsburgh will win, however my heart is with
Seattle, a team that I have followed since I was just a kid. All
I know is that this should be a great game with two classic
defensive teams.

How is the handle for the Big Game? How does it compare to
previous years?

GJ, BoDog.com: Still too early to tell. However, it’s well ahead
of last year’s handle at this time. The majority of our handle
(around 80%) comes in 24 hours before the game, and most happens
two hours before kickoff. I expect a handle well over $10
million just on this game, including props and future bets.

Are you interested at all in the
Ricky-Davis-for-Wally-Szczerbiak trade? Does it do anything for
either team in terms of who you’d wager on?

GJ, BoDog.com: I know the ladies in Minnesota are quite upset to
lose Wally, or so I hear! Szczerbiak is having a great season;
however he is not exactly strong on defense. Ricky Davis is more
of a complete player, as long as his attitude stays in check.
Jury is still out on who got the better of the deal. However, I
believe you have to give that edge to Boston. They are that much
better (and younger) now with Wally in the line-up, a legitimate
3-point shooter. Seems clear they have made their big push for a
playoff spot in the East, and you can expect far fewer turnovers
now that Ricky Davis and Mark Blount are out of the lineup.
Celts can stretch the floor better now that they finally have a
shooter that can hit from downtown. The Celts are only four
games out of the eighth and final playoff spot in the East, with
around 37 games still to play. When you factor in the youth, the
decreased turnovers and the ability to spread the floor and hit
the deep one, there is no doubt in my mind that they will be a
team to reckon with before this season is through.

Kind of an off-beat question: How good is Northern Iowa in
college hoops? They’re ranked 25th this week, and are 19-3 with
wins against Iowa and LSU. Will they make the Sweet 16?

GJ, BoDog.com:Who? Just messing with you. Right now there is a
lot of hype on the Panthers due to them making the Top 25 for
the first time in team history. That said, I think there will be
a lot of pressure on these kids to continue down the stretch, as
evidenced with their loss to Creighton this week. I’m sure they
will get into the tourney, but I can’t see them doing much
damage due to it being slightly overwhelming for them.

The NBA Needs To Change It’s Playoff Format…Now

Gepost door admin op 01/05/2008

One great thing about the NBA and commissioner David Stern is that they fix mistakes with their game. Case in point - in 2003 the NBA switched the first round of the playoffs from a best-of-five game series to a best-of-seven to help ensure that the better team advances. That’s why it’s mind boggling to wonder why they won’t change the playoff format to account for debacles like this season.

If a non-sports fan took a quick check at the 2006 Western Conference Standings and then the Playoff bracket, they would scratch their heads in disbelief. The Dallas Mavericks had the second best record in the conference at 60-22, three games behind conference leading San Antonio. The Denver Nuggets were 44-38, 19 games behind San Antonio. Yet, come playoff time the Nuggets were the #3 seed while the Mavericks were the #4 seed. All because Dallas happens to play in the same division as San Antonio and the top three seeds HAVE TO be division winners. So now Dallas and San Antonio are meeting in the second round of the playoffs as opposed to the Western Conference Championship, where the two best teams should be meeting.

To add to the chaos, the #6 seeded LA Clippers had a better record than the #3 seed Nuggets. Therefore, in their first round series the #6 seed had the home court advantage! This is because the NBA gives the team with the better record the home court advantage…but not the higher seed. Does that make sense at all? If you are going to reward division winners with the top three seeds, shouldn’t you also reward them with home court advantage? Or you could just reward the teams with the better record with the home court advantage AND the higher seed! This isn’t rocket science Mr. Stern.

If all of that wasn’t embarrassing enough, at the end of the regular season the NBA was faced with the worst possible scenario for a sporting event - a game where it was better for each team to lose. The #5 seeded Memphis Grizzlies were playing the #6 seed Clippers with the loser having the inside track to the #6 seed and home court advantage in the first round. The winner would likely get the #5 seed and a date with the Mavericks in the first round. The Clippers “lost” the game and went on to get the #6 seed, home court advantage, and a relatively easy win over the Nuggets in the first round. The Grizzlies “won” the game, the #5 seed, and were promptly swept out of the playoffs by the superior Mavericks.

The NBA cannot allow this to happen again. It’s an embarrassment to their game and to all things sports. There should never be a game where it is in each teams best interest to lose. So what do I propose?

The most simple and logical solution to this problem is to guarantee each division winner a spot in the playoffs, but then seed the teams based on their records with the highest seed always having home court. All ties in record would go to the division winner. This still makes winning the division important - it guarantees you a spot in the playoffs and the upper hand in tie breakers - but also ensures that the best teams get the best seeds and home court advantage. I liken it to the NCAA Tournament - winning the Big Ten or the ACC doesn’t guarantee you a number one seed, it guarantees you a spot in the tournament.

Here’s what the seeding looked like this year:

1. *San Antonio (63-19)
2. *Phoenix (54-28)
3. *Denver (44-38)
4. Dallas (60-22)
5. Memphis (49-33)
6. LA Clippers (47-35)
7. LA Lakers (45-37)
8. Sacramento (44-38)

*Division Winner

Here’s what it would have looked like in my proposed system:

1. *San Antonio (63-19)
2. Dallas (60-22)
3. *Phoenix (54-28)
4. Memphis (49-33)
5. LA Clippers (47-35)
6. LA Lakers (45-37)
7. *Denver (44-38)
8. Sacramento (44-38)

*Division Winner

Amazing! The best teams actually have the highest seeds AND have the home court advantage, all while still preserving the importance of winning a division. This would prevent Dallas and San Antonio from playing in the second round, ensure that Memphis would have home court advantage and not be stuck playing Dallas, and prevent Denver from getting the #3 seed just for winning the division…all while keeping the integrity of winning a division by giving Denver the #7 seed over Sacramento for winning their division.

Please, please do the right thing for next season Mr. Stern and adopt a system that is fair for every team. Don’t let this disaster turn into the new BCS. Do what you always do - fix what’s wrong.

When you are looking for tickets and travel accommodations to spring training you will find that they are usually a lot easier to purchase and less expensive than most football tickets. In addition, it is nice to spend the rainy seasons of February or March in Florida or Arizona where there is better weather. Spring training can often be a family-bonding affair.

There are two leagues for you to choose from when deciding where to travel. The Cactus League in Arizona and the Grapefruit League in Florida.

By looking at a good driving time chart, you can determine the best place to stay so you can make it to the most parks within the shortest amount of time. Look through online sources to find a good deal on local hotels. Some websites will even notify you of where teams are staying so you can possibly get player autographs. Tickets to the games will cost between five and fifteen dollars.

If you prefer to have someone else make the travel arrangements then you can contact Spring Training Tours through their website. This company specializes in packages to spring training locations. The site will give you a list of hotels to choose from in two, three, five or seven night packages. The package comes with a four-door rental car, a welcome reception from your favorite team’s manager, an autograph session with your favorite teams players, game tickets, a souvenir merchandise package, including all taxes. They also offer discounts on airfare. Most two-night packages start around $550 a person. If you have four or more people, the price can go down to $400.
